Image Entertainment, an RLJ Entertainment (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand, has acquired the North American distribution rights for Caliber Media’s DARK WAS THE NIGHT, directed by Jack Heller (ENTER NOWHERE), after the film’s premiere at ScreamFest in Los Angeles and subsequent screening at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies, New York’s top genre film festival. Image is planning a multi-city theatrical release later this year. Mark Ward, RLJ Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Acquisitions for the Image brands, made the announcement today.
“DARK WAS THE NIGHT received an overwhelming response at ScreamFest and the Film Society in New York,” said Ward. “We are excited to bring this film to the genre community on the big screen and digital platforms.”

Kevin Durand (The Strain) and Lukas Haas (INCEPTION) star as local policemen who go to battle against an ancient evil in the film that CRAVE ONLINE called “an exquisite creature feature.” The script, from Tyler Hisel, appeared on the 2009 Black List of best un-produced scripts, a rarity for the monster genre, under the title THE TREES. Rounding out the cast are Bianca Kajlich (Undateable), Sabina Gadecki (the ENTOURAGE movie), Heath Freeman (SKATELAND), Steve Agee (@midnight) and Nick Damici (LATE PHASES).

The deal was negotiated by Mark Ward on behalf of Image Entertainment and by Dallas Sonnier on behalf of Caliber Media.

The film begins when a long slumbering evil is awoken in the trees outside the remote town of Maiden Woods. Isolated and threatened, it sets its sights on the townspeople, as Sheriff Paul Shields (Kevin Durand) attempts to overcome the demons of his past, so that he may protect thoe lives of the people he loves.
Heller produced the feature with his Caliber partner Sonnier, Sundial’s Stefan Nowicki and Joey Carey, and P Street’s Dylan Narang. Preferred Content’s Kevin Iwashina and Ross Dinerstein executive produced the film alongside screenwriter Hisel and his manager Alexander Robb.

“Since we premiered at ScreamFest, Mark and his team at Image have been passionate supporters of the film and of our company,” said Heller and Sonnier. “The film is in very good hands and we are excited to bring this story to a wider audience.”

THE WALKING DECEASED

ARC Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to the hilarious horror spoof THE WALKING DECEASED. Directed by Scott Dow and written by Tim Ogletree, the film stars Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie, Ghost World), Joey Oglesby (Fruitvale Station, NBC’s Friday Night Lights) and Tim Ogletree (Supernatural Activity). The deal was announced today by ARC Entertainment’s Head of Acquisitions Scott Moesta.
“We are extremely excited to release this film that explores a fresh comedic perspective of iconic zombie stories that we have all come to love,” said Moesta. “Dave Sheridan and the filmmakers created this ingenious film for the genre fans, and we’re thrilled to bring it to them on the big screen as well as the various home entertainment channels.”

THE WALKING DECEASED is the Scary Movie of the zombie genre, ripping on the biggest and best of zombie pop-culture, arguably the most crazed genre in the world. The story follows a group of survivors from all walks of the apocalypse – an idiotic Sheriff with definite coma-induced brain damage, his hardass son and a hobo with only a crossbow to stave off the walking dead, four squabbling friends forced to survive this zombieland together, and a lonely zombie who just needs love to fully regain his warm body – who leave their once-safe mall hideout in search of the rumored Safe Haven Ranch, a refuge untouched by the zombie virus that has ravaged humanity. But despite the comforting name, they discover that this sanctuary may not be as welcoming as advertised. Tearing apart powerhouses like The Walking Dead, Zombieland, Warm Bodies, World War Z, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and even Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead, THE WALKING DECEASED rips the flesh off the spoof genre and infects it with a virus too hilarious not to spread.
THE WALKING DECEASED was produced by Jonathan M. Black, Francis Casanova, Philip Marlatt, Derek Lee Nixon, Tim Ogletree, Dave Sheridan, Todd Slater and Kurt Wehner and executive produced by Tim Fisher and Ken Tayloe. The deal was negotiated by ARC Entertainment’s Scott Moesta and Todd Slater on behalf of the filmmakers.
Recent ARC Entertainment releases include Lullaby starring Garrett Hedlund, Richard Jenkins, Amy Adams, Jessica Brown Findlay and Anne Archer; Sweetwater starring January Jones, Jason Isaacs and Jason Aldean; Plastic with Will Poulter, Alfie Allen, Emma Rigby and Ed Speleers; and soon to be released The Barber with Scott Glenn, Kristen Hager and Chris Coy.
