The Fort Garry Hotel

The Fort Garry Hotel is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was built in 1913. It was originally supposed to be called The Selkirk, however it was decided that it should be named after Upper Fort Garry, which once stood at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

Fort Garry was popular from the start, hosting many famous guests including Queen Elizabeth, King George VI, Laurence Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Liberaci. What makes the hotel so popular today is all the reports of strange activity, especially in room 202, from guests and staff alike. The claims range from staff seeing blood dripping down the walls of room 202 to guests waking up in the middle of the night to the apparition of a woman in a cloak hovering at the foot of their bed! Other reports include housekeepers being locked in room 202 and windows in the room apparently shattering out of nowhere! Even former Ontario Liberal MP Brenda Chamerlain noticed something strange going on in room 202! During her stay in the room back in 2004 she claimed she was awoken by the sensation of somebody getting into bed with her… twice!

So you’re probably wondering what the deal with room 202 is, right? Well apparently many years ago there was a young woman was staying in the room. During her stay she found out that her husband had died in a car crash. She was so heartbroken she hung herself in the closest of room 202.

Another story from room 202 is about a young boy who was on a trip with his family organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He had apparently requested to stay in room 202 after hearing all the stories about the room. During his stay he decided to take some pictures with his film camera. A few months later when he got the photos back, all the pictures had turned out… except for the ones in and around room 202. The little boy was apparently pretty stoked, saying that the ghosts were “camera shy”.

The woman from room 202 reportedly haunts the hotel lounge as well. She has been witness by guests and staff, usually crying in the corner.

Staff have also reported seeing the ghost of a young woman wearing a robe walking down the hallway. Others have reported seeing a woman in a ball gown. Sometimes ghosts are even witnessed in rooms other than room 202, usually at the foot of the bed.

Now, this last story about the hotel takes place in 1989. An employee was in the kitchen tidying up late at night. He was on his way up the stairs at around 4am when he started hearing strange noises coming from the locked dining room. He immediately rushed to get the key. Upon opening the door he noticed the figure of a man sitting at a table. He ran on to get another staff member to show them what he had witnessed, but by the time he got back, the mysterious man was gone.

So what do you think? Haunted hotel or a clever hoax to attract guests? The Fort Garry Hotel is now a National Historic Landmark, however it is still open to this day. If you’re brave enough to check it out for yourself, you can go to this link to book a room:

The Witch of Plum Hollow

Posted in Goth, History, horror, witches on September 28, 2016 by Kristina

I was originally going to do a post about the history of witches in Canada, but due to the fact that witchcraft in Canada is basically nonexistent, I’ll just tell you all about the one witch I could find information on!

plumhollowbook

Elizabeth Jane Barnes(or “Mother Barnes”) was born in Cork, Ireland some time between 1744 and 1800, nobody is really positive on the exact year.

What makes Elizabeth Barnes so special? She was apparently clairvoyant. She was known to have used her gift to solve mysteries, including a murder. Who needs Nancy Drew or Scooby Doo when you have Elizabeth Barnes, right? She was also apparently able to locate hidden treasure.

Elizabeth also used her gift to tell fortunes in her one room log cabin(which is still standing today.) She was very well known for this. People would travel hundreds of miles for her services, some would offer her large sums of money. She would never accept anything more than her standard rate of twenty-five cents though. One of her most noteworthy clients is rumored to have been Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. Elizabeth Barnes believed she got her gift from being the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter.

She was married twice. First to Sergeant Robert Harrison. They met in Ireland then emigrated to Cobourg, Ontario, where they eloped and had one son, Robert Harrison Jr. Unfortunately Robert died shortly after his son was born. About four years after that Elizabeth married her second husband David Barnes and settled near Plum Hollow. Her and David had ten children together, however a few of them died, leaving them with about eight children in total. After a few years together, David left her to be a shoemaker in Smith Falls, taking one of their sons with him… what a dick! He’s lucky child support didn’t exist back then! However, his absence resulted in Elizabeth using her gift to tell fourtunes so she could provide for her children, so I guess it all worked out in the end.

Now, like her year of birth, nobody actually knows when Elizabeth died, but she reportedly died when she was in her early nineties. She rests in an unmarked grave in Sheldon’s Corners, Ontario.
