Found out recently Voice Actress Heather North aka Daphne Blake has passed away really sad as I grew up on Scooby-Doo. She was the ORIGINAL voice actress for the character from 1969-2003. The last time she voiced the character was in 2003 Scooby-Doo and the Monster from Mexico and The Legend of the Vampire. Heather was 71 years old.

Justice League Dark

Posted in Cartoons, Comic Books, DC Comics, Fantasy, horror, Magic with tags , , , , , on November 18, 2016 by chrisdsav

A new DC Animated movie that’s in the same Universe as the last three JL movies War, Atlantis and Vs The Teen Titans)  and the Batman animated films (Son of, Vs Robin and Bad Blood.) We have the JL Dark with a bit of a roster change compared to the comic in the launch of the NEW 52 back in 2011. This team consists of Constantine, Deadman, Swamp Thing, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. The cover art for the home video release is also below the only problem I have with it is the stupid Warner Brothers Animation marketing team felt the need to put BATMAN on the fucking cover on the front. I mean REALLY DC that’s not needed. Bats is not part of this JL. You make it seem like its his team when this team is more being led by John Constantine ( as voiced by Matt Ryan from the cancelled TV show.)
It comes out on Digital in Jan and then disk Feb.

jldark_box_art_3d_211752

Synopsis below

When innocent civilians begin committing unthinkable crimes across Metropolis, Gotham City and beyond, Batman must call upon mystical counterparts to eradicate this demonic threat to the planet. Enter Justice League Dark, reluctantly led by the Hellblazer himself, John Constantine. Like Batman, Constantine is a cunning, often cynical loner who is the best at his chosen profession – but quickly realizes the sinister forces plaguing the planet will require help from other supernatural alliances. Forming a new “league” with sorceress Zatanna, otherworldly Deadman, and Jason Blood and his powerful alter ego Etrigan the Demon, this team of Dark Arts specialists must unravel the mystery of Earth’s supernatural plague and contend with the rising, powerful villainous forces behind the siege – before it’s too late for all of mankind.

Ghostbusters Cartoons

Posted in 80s, Cartoons, DVD, entertainment, ghosts, horror, remakes with tags , on July 12, 2016 by chrisdsav

There was an announcement a few weeks ago that we are getting a new Ghostbusters cartoon set in the future. This sounds very similar to Dan Akroyds original script for Ghostbusters which was to be set in the future, I’m sure there is no coincidence. Up to this point Ghostbusters cartoons have been hit or miss there is no denying that the Real Ghostbusters was a hit. The Extreme Ghostbusters depending on who you talk to is a hit or miss among fans. It did give us a abetter diverse cast than what we have coming out Friday.

I’m not going to go over the entire show so many other people have done that but I will point out some of the highlights of the show and my favorite episodes, including thoughts on  the Extreme. Sorry Filmmation Ghostbusters I just don’t have enough interest to cover your cartoon based on the 1970s tv show.  The Real Ghostbusters recently returned in an IDW mini series crossing them over with the ongoing story arc.

ghostbusters_get_real_comic_issue_1_823638

ALL EPISODES ARE NOW AVAILABLE ON HOME VIDEO however the new set does not contain all the episodes and lacks any bonus material

Collect Call of the Cthulhu

If this is not the BEST episode of the entire cartoon I don’t know what is. The Necronomicon is stolen from the NY public Library the same library seen in the beginning of Ghostbusters the movie. The guys team up with a spell caster from Miskatonic university and actually fight Cthulhu and his cult of worshipers. ” He makes Gozer look like little Mary Sunshine” Its dark its drawn well and it kicks ass go buy it now

Ragnarok and Roll

A guy depressed over losing his girl friend decides to bring about the end of the world with a magic flute than can summon some bad shit. This episode is one of the darkest ever and a touching love story. A great moment is when he comes to his senses with the help of his faithful companion his ex and the guys and cant stop Ragnarok Egon put a plan together and commands his team perfectly

The Night Halloween Was forever

Sam Hain the living embodiment of Halloween comes back to bring about Halloween forever. He appears in two episodes both equally good. They talk about the lore of Halloween and there is some cool imagery. I like the second episode more minus the Jr Ghostbusters who are annoying Sam turns the firehouse into his new headquarters.

The Boogey Man Cometh

A look into the history of Egon Spengler as he was terrified of the Boogey man now BM has a voice so raspy and creepy only Frank Welker ( Megatron, Dr.Claw Slimer) could pull it off. In the second episode Egon gets thrown off a building and nearly dies and has to come to grips with the fall but he also frees the Boogey man from  his prison. Its darker in tone I think and really hits it on all levels.

Extreme Ghostbusters

Over all this show was hit or miss I like the animation at times and its really dark and moody in almost every episode. You have the four kids being trained by Egon and its something we had hoped the 3rd movie should have been about. Alas with the Death of Harold Ramis  we didn’t get that we got ….well see it Friday

9127K1OEthL._SX342_

Time Life Warner put out a great box set filled with bonus material and the toons just got released on dvd again last week, but be warned its a paltry set compared to what we got in 2009. No word on Extreme Ghostbusters yet.

Stay tuned for another Ghostbuster review later this week.

It’s written by John Horace Tobin a paranormal investigator who didn’t make any cartoon or movie appearance but did appear in the Now and IDW comic books. This is not going to be a review about how great this book is because you already know that part, but just letting you knew where each of these ghosts appear. A detailed list of mush of their first appearances and what issues or movie or comics or game to find them in. Dr.Chris Record Spotlight : Record Store Day

Posted in Cartoons, music, vampires, vinyl on April 16, 2016 by chrisdsav

Started back in 2012 to help generate interest in the classic music on a format which had all but disappeared  a decade ago. Over the the last 6 years vinyl has made a resurgence in the market and it’s booking. This is great for stores which have lost much profit to the Internet and physical  media has taken a back door to digital  downloads.
I stopped by That’s Entertainment  in Worcester  MA and Joe’s Albums. PETE the curator of all that is music in the store I been buying my comic books since I was 16 was in charge of today’s events .
The vinyl can be expensive or at just the right price I thought I share some of what I picked up today.

NOSFERATU

Composed by James Bernard for the 1922 original unauthorized  adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Performed by the City Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Such an eerie score to a company one of the first Vampire movies. Wax Works Records recently put out a soundtrack to the 1970’s remake recently. We will be doing a spotlight on that one soon.

Disney the Silly Symphony Collection
The Skeleton Dance is a cute little song from Disney dating back to 1929. (Notice the theme here) written by Carl Stalling. It startled critics years ago giving them a Fright by its animation and kicked off the Silly Symphony going from 29-39.

image

How To Train Your Dragon.
An Academy  Award nominated  score by John Powell it really fits the the type of movie this is about a boy and his Dragon in a viking village gripped by Xenophobia  over the destruction  Dragons cause.

I also picked up Carl Douglas Kung Fu Fighting. I couldn’t help my self.

DEATH NOTE

Posted in Cartoons, death, entertainment, news, thriller with tags on February 26, 2016 by chrisdsav

Super DUPER deluxe bluray set looks amazing and worth the price if you never owed the series before.
I was going to buy the dvd set at Bestbuy until I saw that this was coming out.

image

Deathnote is based on the hugely popular Manga of the same name  from Japan.
Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s suspenseful story follows Light a high school student who discovers a notebook with the ability to kill whomever he wishes. WRiting their name in it.
I jumped on this anime show a little later than most people had. I’m really picky about my Anime. A lot of the time the writing can be real dense and over wrought with drama and dialogue that is taking it self way too seriously.
Of course I watch a ton of Hentai and actually enjoy the narrative between sex secenes, so what does that say about me?

The list of bonus material included is worth the price point if 69.99

This limited edition 6-disc collector’s set includes the complete 37-episode series with five language options along with two feature films (available in three languages) and hours of additional extras! This definitive set also comes with a 64-page booklet, which features the original manga pilot story that inspired the series packaged inside an exclusive chipboard box. Three hours of additional extra content includes interviews with the Japanese creators, behind-the-scenes footage of the English and Japanese voice cast, production art, audio commentary and much more

I think the best part is you get two of the three live action movies. L Change The World  is not included.

If you have never seen this show before and always wanted to check it out this be a great set to pick up this Spring.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Posted in Anime/Manga, Cartoons, robots, sci-fi on February 8, 2016 by chrisdsav

image

At my local Bestbuy I learned Neon Genesis Evangelion 3.33 had been released on blu ray and I had to obtain the next chapter in the enhanced anime series. First though  I thought I share with you a memory flash back.

I was going thru my local flea market in Charlton MA back in 2004 and on a table were the first 6 vol of an anime show I had only seen commercials for and heard very little about. I decided to take a chance after several conversations with other anime fans who told me I was missing out.
I snatched up all 6 after making a deal with the vendor, and it exposed me to the most adult giant robot show of all time. I hunted down the other remaining vol to finish the show. I never got into the manga in which its based on.

3 young pilots living in post apocalyptic  Japan pilot  giant robots called Eva to defend their country against  demonic looking creatures with so much mystery  and intriguing  plot points you can see why it’s such a beloved show. The main character Shinji  lives in this harem style plot line in his apartment where he is the only male living with three gorgeous woman two teenage girls snd his handler. All the while his father is the head of the Eva program and is as much a  father figure as Darth Vader was.

The reason I bring it up on Radio of Horror is its the darkest anime sci fi show I have ever watched. Yes there is horror shows and Demon rape shows like hentai. But look at the over all flowing stpry narative of this one snd really get a sence of a foreboding snd Sinister plot.

Now recently the show has been released in these movie formats sets called 1.11 2.22 and 3.33. They condense the shows bigger plot points into movies that might be easier for the average viewer to handel.
This is enhanced by superior  animation and graphic touch up with CGI  being used to enhance the special effects.

3.33 You can not redo Is the newest Editon out now and if you never watched the show or were very confused by it’s story telling I recommend this set.

Fall Mini Reviews Part 1

Posted in Cartoons, Horror Movies, Monsters, movies, thriller, vampires on October 5, 2015 by chrisdsav

Hey every one been awhile since I did one of these the Horror movies have piled up on my so lets just dive right into them. We will have another list in a week or so as there are SOOOO MANY movies to go over.

Let start with the new kids movie

Hotel Transylvania 2

The sequel to the 2012 movie directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (creator director behind Samurai Jack and Star Wars The Clone Wars) brings back Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg Selena Gomez and more including Mel Brooks as Grandpa Vlad, in a funny Horror comedy for the family. I really enjoyed the first one and this one. It was recently announced by Sony they are making a part 3 but Genndy will not be returning. Mavis an John have a baby and Dracula is worried he wont be a monster. Check it out its awesome fun and just in time for Halloween.

Blood Sucking Bastards

A movie where Office Space meets corporate Vampires. Its a funny rom-com int he vein of Sean of The Dead. A office software programmer (Fran Kranz from Cabin in the Woods)  who says the worst thing to his smoking hot girl friend (Emma Fitzpatrick)  learns Vampires are taking over the office one employee at a time. With the help of his stoner best friend they have to take back the office one Vampire at a time. Brian James O’Connell directs one of the best sleeper comedies of the year.

BSB

The Visit

M Night Shyamalan has had a rocky career since the 6th scene. With a few hits and a lot of shitty films like The Last Air Bender and after Earth, this is the first one in a long time I can say I really enjoyed. Yes you do see the twist coming if you put certain clues together and pay attention but I didn’t and I’m glad cuz I was not spoiled on anything I didn’t want to see. A couple of kids go to visit their grand parents and they act like the craziest people you ever met. Its not the best thriller ever made, but its better than the last time he made a movie.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Review

Posted in Cartoons, Christmas, Comedy, DVD, entertainment, Goth, horror, Monsters, movies, music, Video Games on December 24, 2014 by chrisdsav

Tim Burton’s classic film makes me feel a wee bit old as it can out when I was entering high school.
It’s 21 years old and still holds up today.
What a weird movie crossing Christmas and Halloween making it twice the Holiday movie.
The great Chris Sarandon play Jack Skellington the Pumpkin king of Halloween town. He wants to bring Christmas to his dark gothic little town and with the help of some mischief makers he kidnaps Santa Claus and takes over. But then has to rescue Santa from Oggie Boogie his arch nemesis.
Patrick Stewart does an amazing job as the voice narrarartor.
Catherine o Hare play Sally Jack’s girl friend and a great show of what hot dead chicks can look like….years later Corpse Bride.

image

Danny Elfmans score is amazing and really helps bring the stop motion animation to life. The movie is not directed by Burton but by Henry Selick. This is still Burton’s vision. I think at the time Burton was working on Ed Wood.

The visuals in this movie are really creepy and some great uses if stop motion the likes if which we don’t get very often. Hot topics really had a field day with the merchandising of this film and it continues today.
Chris would return to play Jack in two Kingdom Heart video games for Play Station2. A game series that crosses Disney and Final Fantasy.  And you thought crossing Christmas with Halloween was weird. These games were recently rereleased for The PS3.
The blu Ray has some decent bonus material with commentary and Burton’s short film Vincent which I a tribute to the late great Vincent Price.

The soundtrack was redone with great covers by Marylin Manson Fiona Apple Fallout boy and others.
This is a great film no matter ifn it’s Halloween or Christmas.
