The series we thought was gone and now Their baaaack, The remake of Poltergeist came out this weekend no mixed to awful reviews. I thought I go over the legacy of Poltergeist and that even includes the tv series.
POLTERGEIST
In 1982 Steven Spielberg and Toby Hooper created Poltergeist staring Craig T Nelson (The Incredibles and Coach) The Freeling Family who has been living over a cemetery unknowing cuz they moved the headstones but they didn’t move the body. Which is one of the best lines of the movie as Dad Craig finds out shouting it at his boss the realtor who sold them the house. After they lose their daughter Carol An, They team up with a group of worthless ghostbusters and don’t clean the house. It takes a psychic Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein). The mom goes to the other side to rescue their daughter and they the house tries to kill the whole family, they escape after mom takes a bath in the pool with real live skeletons. (Something the filmmakers neglected to tell anyone.) This film had more problems and the curse that followed plagues it today. Four of the cast members are DEAD, the sister Dana-Dominique Dunne, Carol Anne-Heather O Rourke, Pugsley-Lou Perryman, and Zelda. This has some of the best special effects for ghost seen at the time till Ghostbusters came along. The music was composed by Jerry Goldsmith for this and the next film.
POLTERGEIST 2 The Other Side
The Freeling Family now living with their grandmother on their mother’s side has tried to escape the events from a couple of years ago. But then the Reverend Kane a creepy old man (Julian Beck). With the help of a medicine man suggested by Tangina who realizes that the child Carol Anne has psychic powers the evil Poltergeist want. They go to the other side after encountering a slug like creature (a design by H.G. Giger they go to the other side to fight Kane and stop the Poltergeist who killed their grandmother. This was as good as the original and I only just watched it a few weeks ago and thought it really enhances the first film. The new character Kane would always scare the hell out of me as a kid. I really liked the medicine man Joseph. The look of the Poltergeist world was not what I though it be, Its all white and heavenly. This movie lost both new characters to the horror of the Poltergeist Legacy.
POLTERGEIST 3
They drop the subtitle for the third one a lot of the time you notice that.
This time the girl moves in with her aunt and uncle to get away from the evil spirts. I just think no one else wanted to come back and do the third one but Heather. They are in a big high rise apartment building in New York city now. In this film the Poltergeist pack up with Kane and move to New York with her. Zelda returns as well as Tangina spitting out her cryptic mumbo jumbo. The aunt and uncle are played by Tom Skerritt (Alien) and Nancy Alan (RoboCop 1,2,3). Kane and Tangina meet and go hand and hand into the light and this time Kane is played by Nathan Davis replacing the original actor who passed away. They lose the girl they find the girl it’s the same plot but this time it’s in a big high rise not the suburbs There were also some fire fighters who died making this movie which is very sad. Heather died at the age of 12 shortly before this movie was released. The curse of Poltergeist had done its job one final time.
Poltergeist The Legacy
This has nothing to do with the movies. This a Canadian horror television series which ran from 1996 to 1999. The series tells the story of the members of a secret society known as the Legacy and their efforts to protect humankind from occult dangers. Despite bearing the Poltergeist name, there is no real connection between the show and the Poltergeist films aside from the title.
Poltergeist: The Legacy debuted on Showtime, and all first-run episodes of the first three seasons premiered on that network, though they were later syndicated. After the third season, Showtime cancelled the show, and the rights were purchased by Sci-Fi Channel which continued the series for another season.
Poltergeist 4 The Remake
Same plot line as before. Sam Rockwell playing Craig Nelsons character of the father, provided some neat one liners and funny moments as he always does in anything he’s in but this fell flat and drama actor Rosemary Dewitt as the mom and disappeared from the box office very fast this past month. Despite it having bad reviews it actually made back its budget and a profit as these lower budget horror movies will do. We will get a sequel….just watch. Instead of an adorable woman with a squeaky voice we get a reality TV star that the older daughter is obsessed with played by Jarred Harris. The son instead of the mom goes into the further which is like some CGI out of an early 2000s video game it’s so bad. The movie poster put too much into the creepy clown that attacks the son. This is not even the mcguffin of the movie it’s just there to scare people with clowns. Bad remake not needed produced by Sam Raimi …..sigh Sam stop producing these crappy horror movies and direct a good horror movie.
