MANRAY Returns

Posted in entertainment, Goth, music, news with tags , , , on January 18, 2023 by chrisdsav

MANRAY a Goth club in Massachusetts known by many but my first discovered it while doing research on Goth Culture ( for a book that never came out unfortunately and the research is long since lost)

I was introduced to the club by Artist Aaron White back in 1999 it was mind blowing. I had never seen anything like it in my very young adult life.  I was blown away by the music the atmosphere and the time spent. I went back a few times here and there before they closed there doors On July 30, 2005, after more than 20 years. Manray owner wanted to cash in on the property value and now it’s condos. The new club opened right around the corner from the old location.

On Halloween 2015 ManRay Revival happened under the tutelage of Club Frequenter Xtine and Heroes Host with the help of some amazing people had a return for a night and it was a blast with love bands and great music. I was there the entire day helping set up. Now 8 years last last Sat a soft opening RSVP event ManRay returned. It’s full opening happens to be tonight Crypt night. Saturday RSVP was a taste of what is to return for the club and want you can expect.

Chris Ewens who has a long industries music career as an award winning DJ from Detroit who came to the Boston area Going back to the mid 80s. He  was the head  DJ for ManRay from 86-2005. He spins a collection of weird unusual goth and industrial works or art.

Some of which I recognized some of loved some I couldn’t find my dance groove too, but I’m not a super dancer so that’s not to say it was bad music. The dance flood has a central stage and two ajoining smaller stages for gogo dancing and a lounge area to breath and relax away from the main floor crowd and music.

They had a bit of late opening starting an hour past the schedule time due to some technology issues and we have all dealt with technology being a pain in the ass.  I didn’t arrive till 1030 and was able to get in by 11. I didn’t get a chance to try their drink of the night as the line for that was not moving but was escortes over by a lovely goth girl I got to chatting to a bar on the other side of the club for a nice cold Blue Moon. I am so glad I got in on Saturday. They have four nights if you been missing the goth night life of Boston Check it out tonight.

Hellraiser Bloodlines Screenplay

Posted in Books, entertainment, Goth, horror with tags , , , on July 19, 2022 by chrisdsav

I am a casual Fan of Hellraiser 4 Bloodlines it was the FIRST and only Hellraiser movie I ever saw in theaters and coincince it was the last large commercial film of the series to be in theaters. I have this book and love it and hope to have Peter on the show to chat about it coming up.

You may well be a fan of the first two or three Hellraiser movies who found that your relationship with this fourth one was … well, what shall we say? Complicated, maybe? You may, if you were of a kindly and forgiving nature, have found the film somewhat interesting, even occasionally entertaining, but you probably also found it confusing, felt that something just wasn’t right about it. You may have noticed the director’s name—Alan Smithee—and googled it, and discovered that Alan Smithee doesn’t exist, that the name is a pseudonym sometimes applied to movies that have been significantly troubled during production and post-production by crises both financial and creative. Whilst you’ll never get to see a Director’s Cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, you can read in this book what was supposed to be…

Comic Book Spotlight: DEATH Update

Posted in Adult, Comic Books, DC Comics, death, Fantasy, Goth, horror, Horror Babes with tags , , on July 6, 2020 by chrisdsav

Neil Gaiman in 1989 created Sandman aka Morpheus aka Dreamer.  This would become one of his most famous creations. 8 issues into the series he showed us a character who has been around since time it self DEATH.

image

But unlike the version depicted in all of cinema and tv up to that point this was a perky little goth girl. She would be the living embodiment of Death, but in a fun way. The original appearance of Death before the Crisis On Infinite Earths is Weird War Tales #8. The artist on the Vertigo book was Steve Dringenberg. Marvel has their own version who is coveted by Thanos, the Avenger villain.
She tries to help her brother Dream lighten up after the crap he went thru with Dr.Destiny in the previous issues.

Death design is based on a singer.
Neil Gaiman is quoted below about Death

“Death is the only major character whose visuals didn’t spring from me; that credit goes to Steve Dringenberg. In my original Sandman outline, I suggested Death look like rock star Nico in 1968, with the perfect cheekbones and perfect face she has on the cover of her Chelsea Girl album.

But Dringenberg had his own ideas, so he sent me a drawing based on a woman he knew named Cinamon Hadley the drawing that was later printed in Sandman 11 — and I looked at it and had the immediate reaction of, “Wow. That’s really cool.” Later that day, Dave McKean and I went to dinner in Chelsea at the My Old Dutch Pancake House and the waitress who served us was a kind of vision. She was American, had long black hair, was dressed entirely in black — black jeans, T-shirt, etc. — and wore a big silver ankh on a silver necklace. And she looked exactly like  Dringenberg’s drawing of Death” Unfortunately Cinamon would pass away a few years later.

image

She would return a few issues later to help a transgender Metamorpho with identity confusion.
Then in 1993 She got her own series. This is how I learned of the character and was hooked ever since. Death the High Cost of Living and in 1996 Death the Time of Your Life. Both were written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Chris Bachalo.
In both stories she is taking a day off to help those in need. High cost is considered the better of the two.

Death demonstrates safe sex by placing a condom on a banana held by John Constantine. Lightening the impact of the underlying message, she informs the reader that when one is through with the demonstration, “you can eat the banana.” This was used in high school health classes and is also reprinted as an addendum to the Death: The High Cost of Living trade paperback.
There is a third Death series, but she never appears and acts more as a force of nature. So similar to what she is in real life.

Recently DC published all Death stories and art in one volume except the manga.

She had a DC manga series as well called At Deaths Door by Jill Thompson.

She made two appearance in the Marvel Universe, at the wedding of Rick Jones and Marlo Chandler in The Incredible Hulk #418 by Peter David and Gary Frank (handing Marlo a hair brush, a visual pun referring to Marlo’s recent ‘brush with death’).
Then in the JLA Avengers crossover she appears with the Marvel Universe Death, and Dead man a DC character By George Perez and Mark Waid

image

Death appeared in Action Comics #894, which was written by Paul Cornell. Cornell confirmed that Neil Gaiman has given his approval for the use of Death in the story line.  In the story, while searching for a black power ring. Luthor had encountered the rings in the Blackest Night story arc. Death never appeared and I never learned why.
Lex Luthor has a conversation with her in that issue. The cover is by David Finch and one of my favorite drawings of her.
She appears again in Action Comics #900 and in The Flash(vol. 3) #6, part of the Brightest Day crossover.

In the DC television series Arrow, a younger Felicity Smoke is shown with black hair and an ankh necklace as a subtle nod to Death

Death had yet to show up in the new 52, but was in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe which has recently all been cancelled due to the ending of Vertigo comics last year.  We can only assume it’s a matter of time before she shows up in new The Sandman series or one of the other supernatural DC books.

On July 15, 2020 an Audio Book of SANDMAN vol 1 will be released thru Audible with Kat Denning ( Thor, Two Broke Girls)  playing her voice.

The Crow Hack/Slash

Cassie Hack, the Killer of Undead Killers,
Sets Her Sights on The Crow!
The Crow: Hack/Slash Brings You the Bloodiest Face-Off in Comics,
Courtesy of Tim Seeley, Jim Terry, and IDW Publishing

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2019) – Hack/Slash creator Tim Seeley brings his singular vision of horror – and his unique version of the “Final Girl” – to IDW in The Crow: Hack/Slash, a comic book crossover debuting in June. Illustrated by Tim Seeley with inks by returning Crow artist Jim Terry, this four-issue miniseries sees fan-favorite femme fatale Cassie Hack on the trailer of an all-new Crow… one unlike any that fans have seen before!

In The Crow: Hack/Slash #1, a soul is brought back… but something is terribly wrong! The resurrected Angeles Cero won’t stop killing on a quest for revenge, and the bodies are piling up. Now, slasher hunter Cassie Hack and her monstrous partner Vlad are on the trail of the Crow Killer, wrongly believing themselves in pursuit of a masked murderer they’ve hunted for years.

The Crow defined me as a fan of the comics medium, but also introduced me to a whole world of music and fashion that I’d never had access to before – one that completely fit the attitude my teenage brain was desperately looking for,” says Tim Seeley. “It introduced me to the idea that comics could tell dark and personal stories full of pain and beauty. No doubt about it – without O’Barr’s original The Crow, there would never have been a Hack/Slash. Mixing Cassie, Vlad, and The Crow has been in the making for 25 years, and my buddy Jim Terry and I cannot wait to unleash it on the world.”

Jim Terry says, “O’Barr’s The Crow was a turning point for me – his book brought me to indie comics and blew the doors off what I thought a comic could be. Years later, I’d become friends with James and eventually work on The Crow: Skinning the Wolves. It was my first published work and still among the best things I’ve done, and now I get to work in this universe again with my pal Tim Seeley. He’s a clever writer and a gifted storyteller, so I’m excited to take this ride and push some artistic limits!”

Issue #1 will feature a regular cover by Tim Seeley, with a variant edition by Rebekah A. Isaacs (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a special “inked” variant by Seeley.
