The Fort Garry Hotel is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was built in 1913. It was originally supposed to be called The Selkirk, however it was decided that it should be named after Upper Fort Garry, which once stood at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.
Fort Garry was popular from the start, hosting many famous guests including Queen Elizabeth, King George VI, Laurence Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Liberaci. What makes the hotel so popular today is all the reports of strange activity, especially in room 202, from guests and staff alike. The claims range from staff seeing blood dripping down the walls of room 202 to guests waking up in the middle of the night to the apparition of a woman in a cloak hovering at the foot of their bed! Other reports include housekeepers being locked in room 202 and windows in the room apparently shattering out of nowhere! Even former Ontario Liberal MP Brenda Chamerlain noticed something strange going on in room 202! During her stay in the room back in 2004 she claimed she was awoken by the sensation of somebody getting into bed with her… twice!
So you’re probably wondering what the deal with room 202 is, right? Well apparently many years ago there was a young woman was staying in the room. During her stay she found out that her husband had died in a car crash. She was so heartbroken she hung herself in the closest of room 202.
Another story from room 202 is about a young boy who was on a trip with his family organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He had apparently requested to stay in room 202 after hearing all the stories about the room. During his stay he decided to take some pictures with his film camera. A few months later when he got the photos back, all the pictures had turned out… except for the ones in and around room 202. The little boy was apparently pretty stoked, saying that the ghosts were “camera shy”.
The woman from room 202 reportedly haunts the hotel lounge as well. She has been witness by guests and staff, usually crying in the corner.
Staff have also reported seeing the ghost of a young woman wearing a robe walking down the hallway. Others have reported seeing a woman in a ball gown. Sometimes ghosts are even witnessed in rooms other than room 202, usually at the foot of the bed.
Now, this last story about the hotel takes place in 1989. An employee was in the kitchen tidying up late at night. He was on his way up the stairs at around 4am when he started hearing strange noises coming from the locked dining room. He immediately rushed to get the key. Upon opening the door he noticed the figure of a man sitting at a table. He ran on to get another staff member to show them what he had witnessed, but by the time he got back, the mysterious man was gone.
So what do you think? Haunted hotel or a clever hoax to attract guests? The Fort Garry Hotel is now a National Historic Landmark, however it is still open to this day. If you’re brave enough to check it out for yourself, you can go to this link to book a room:
