Comic Book Spotlight: DEATH Update
Posted in Adult, Comic Books, DC Comics, death, Fantasy, Goth, horror, Horror Babes with tags Comic Book Spotlight, DC comics, death on July 6, 2020 by chrisdsavNeil Gaiman in 1989 created Sandman aka Morpheus aka Dreamer. This would become one of his most famous creations. 8 issues into the series he showed us a character who has been around since time it self DEATH.
But unlike the version depicted in all of cinema and tv up to that point this was a perky little goth girl. She would be the living embodiment of Death, but in a fun way. The original appearance of Death before the Crisis On Infinite Earths is Weird War Tales #8. The artist on the Vertigo book was Steve Dringenberg. Marvel has their own version who is coveted by Thanos, the Avenger villain.
She tries to help her brother Dream lighten up after the crap he went thru with Dr.Destiny in the previous issues.
Death design is based on a singer.
Neil Gaiman is quoted below about Death
“Death is the only major character whose visuals didn’t spring from me; that credit goes to Steve Dringenberg. In my original Sandman outline, I suggested Death look like rock star Nico in 1968, with the perfect cheekbones and perfect face she has on the cover of her Chelsea Girl album.
But Dringenberg had his own ideas, so he sent me a drawing based on a woman he knew named Cinamon Hadley the drawing that was later printed in Sandman 11 — and I looked at it and had the immediate reaction of, “Wow. That’s really cool.” Later that day, Dave McKean and I went to dinner in Chelsea at the My Old Dutch Pancake House and the waitress who served us was a kind of vision. She was American, had long black hair, was dressed entirely in black — black jeans, T-shirt, etc. — and wore a big silver ankh on a silver necklace. And she looked exactly like Dringenberg’s drawing of Death” Unfortunately Cinamon would pass away a few years later.
She would return a few issues later to help a transgender Metamorpho with identity confusion.
Then in 1993 She got her own series. This is how I learned of the character and was hooked ever since. Death the High Cost of Living and in 1996 Death the Time of Your Life. Both were written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Chris Bachalo.
In both stories she is taking a day off to help those in need. High cost is considered the better of the two.
Death demonstrates safe sex by placing a condom on a banana held by John Constantine. Lightening the impact of the underlying message, she informs the reader that when one is through with the demonstration, “you can eat the banana.” This was used in high school health classes and is also reprinted as an addendum to the Death: The High Cost of Living trade paperback.
There is a third Death series, but she never appears and acts more as a force of nature. So similar to what she is in real life.
Recently DC published all Death stories and art in one volume except the manga.
She had a DC manga series as well called At Deaths Door by Jill Thompson.
She made two appearance in the Marvel Universe, at the wedding of Rick Jones and Marlo Chandler in The Incredible Hulk #418 by Peter David and Gary Frank (handing Marlo a hair brush, a visual pun referring to Marlo’s recent ‘brush with death’).
Then in the JLA Avengers crossover she appears with the Marvel Universe Death, and Dead man a DC character By George Perez and Mark Waid
Death appeared in Action Comics #894, which was written by Paul Cornell. Cornell confirmed that Neil Gaiman has given his approval for the use of Death in the story line. In the story, while searching for a black power ring. Luthor had encountered the rings in the Blackest Night story arc. Death never appeared and I never learned why.
Lex Luthor has a conversation with her in that issue. The cover is by David Finch and one of my favorite drawings of her.
She appears again in Action Comics #900 and in The Flash(vol. 3) #6, part of the Brightest Day crossover.
In the DC television series Arrow, a younger Felicity Smoke is shown with black hair and an ankh necklace as a subtle nod to Death
Death had yet to show up in the new 52, but was in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe which has recently all been cancelled due to the ending of Vertigo comics last year. We can only assume it’s a matter of time before she shows up in new The Sandman series or one of the other supernatural DC books.
On July 15, 2020 an Audio Book of SANDMAN vol 1 will be released thru Audible with Kat Denning ( Thor, Two Broke Girls) playing her voice.
RIP Steve Ditko
Posted in Comic Books, death, horror, news with tags comic books, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man on July 6, 2018 by chrisdsavIn some very sad news I have to report Artist Steve Ditko has died. He created Doctor Strange Blue Beetle The Creeper Hawk and Dove and more importantly with Stan Lee THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. I owe SOOOOO MUCH to Steve Ditko. Spider-Man is the first comic book character I ever grasped on to and the first comic book book I really ever started Collecting when I was 10 years old. I cant tell you how much Steve Ditko means to me. Doctor Strange is one of my favorite characters of all time. I am at a loss for words beyond saying what I feel he will be missed. Its very sad to hear he had no wife no kids no living relatives.

Cinamon Hadley RIP
Posted in 80s, Comic Books, DC Comics, death, Geekbabes, Goth, news with tags comicbooks, death, Females, music, Punk on January 8, 2018 by chrisdsavCinamon Hadley, the inspiration for the character design of Neil Gaiman’s Death of The Endless featured in his Sandman comics, has passed away from a long battle with cancer on January 6th. I’m pretty sad by this as Death is one of the best characters to be created in comics and really helped me deal with some of my own personal problems.
Neil Gaiman on Death
“Death is the only major character whose visuals didn’t spring from me; that credit goes to Mike Dringenberg. In my original Sandman outline, I suggested Death look like rock star Nico in 1968, with the perfect cheekbones and perfect face she has on the cover of her Chelsea Girl album. But Mike Dringenberg had his own ideas, so he sent me a drawing based on a woman he knew named Cinamon Hadley — the drawing that was later printed in Sandman 11 — and I looked at it and had the immediate reaction of, “Wow. That’s really cool.”
She had been diagnosed with cancer of the colon, which went into remission but returned. The friends of designer Cinamon Hadley have been celebrating her life and mourning her passing.

RIP Carrie Fisher
Posted in actors, death, Geekbabes, news, sci-fi, StarWars with tags Carrie Fisher, death, Star Wars on December 27, 2016 by chrisdsavI have no words over the death of Carrie Fisher it’s really sad and heartbreaking. I may be a horror fan but I am a bigger fan of Star Wars more than anything else.
Being a long time fan of Star Wars for so many years. This is just so frustrating. I am in tears over this We lost Kenny Baker early this year and the actor who played Admiral Ackbar too. She was fierce and strong and in Return of the Jedi incredibly sexy in a gold bikini. Force will be with you Carrie always.
Most Excellent
Posted in 80s, death, DVD, entertainment, sci-fi with tags Shout Factory, Time Travel on June 7, 2016 by chrisdsavWOW may not be Horror but sometimes after covering so much horror you need a little comedy sci-fi from the 80’s and what better way to do that than with none other than BILL AND TED EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. As well as the sequel where they encounter Death ….Bogus
Check out the press release for more details.
Read on for all the details and head over to ShoutFactory.com to pre-order your copy!
From the Press Release:
Excellent! History’s favorite time traveling duo land on September 20, 2016 in a deluxe Blu-ray box set from Shout! Factory titled Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection. The bodacious set includes Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, the Blu-ray debut of the sequel Bogus Journey, and is fully loaded with an entire disc of bonus features, including new interviews and commentary, deluxe packaging, a “Wyld Stallyns” branded guitar pick, vinyl stickers for both films, and previously released extras including The Original Bill & Ted, The Most Triumphant Making-Of, Air Guitar Tutorial, The Linguistic Stylings of B&T, From Scribble to Script, The Hysterical Personages of B&T, and radio spots.
Shout! Factory will also have a limited edition set complete with an exclusive lithograph and exclusive action figure of George Carlin’s character “Rufus,” available on shoutfactory.com beginning June 7. NECA, which created the figure, will also have a Bill & Ted action figure set available in July 2016.
The biggest concern for Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves), two totally excellent dudes from San Dimas, California, has been that their band, the Wyld Stallyns, “will never be a super band until we have Eddie Van Halen on guitar.” But now they’re on the verge of failing history class, and Ted’s father is threatening him with military school. To keep the Wyld Stallyns together, and save the future, they need to deliver an epic history report, so a messenger named Rufus (George Carlin) arrives in a time traveling phone booth to help them out. As they travel through history they pick up some new friends, like the “Bodacious Philosopher” Socrates, “One Very Excellent Barbarian” Genghis Khan, the “Short Dead Dude” Napoleon and “Noah’s Wife” Joan of Arc, and put on one outrageous presentation.
In the sequel Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, the daffy duo travel to Heaven, Hell and points in between as they meet robot versions of themselves, Albert Einstein, the Easter Bunny, and beat the Grim Reaper at a video game. Bogus Journey features an all-star cast including Keanu Reeves (The Matrix), Alex Winter, George Carlin, William Sadler (The Shawshank Redemption), and Pam Grier (Jackie Brown). At the time of its release, Roger Ebert described the film as “a riot of visual invention and weird humor that works on its chosen sub-moronic level, and on several others as well, including some fairly sophisticated ones.” In other words, not bogus at all, dudes.
The Exclusive Limited Edition Set Contains:
- An exclusive, limited edition 8″ tall Rufus action figure by NECA
- An exclusive, limited edition 18″ x 24″ lithograph of the newly-designed art from artist Paul Shipper (this lithograph will ship rolled, in a poster tube)
- Two 6″ x 4″ Bill & Ted stickers
- A Wild Stallyns guitar pick
- Early shipping to arrive two weeks before the national street date

RIP Admiral Ackbar
Posted in 80s, actors, aliens, death, news, sci-fi, StarWars with tags death, Sci-fi, StarWars on April 5, 2016 by chrisdsavSad news as the Force Awakens comes out on blu-ray and dvd today.
Erik Bauersfeld, who died Sunday at the age of 93, wasn’t a household name. But his voice was famous — thanks to three little words delivered by a bulging-eyed, amphibious rebel commander Admiral Ackbar. He was also the voice of Bib Fortuna the alien we meet at the beginning of Return of the Jedi in Jabba’s Palace> Erik returned to voice the Admiral in last years The Force Awakens.
Admiral Ackbar was written as a bit part — a handful of lines in Return of the Jedi, most of them rather defeated. “Prepare to retreat,” “we have no choice, “take evasive action, “we won’t last long!”
And then a futile utterance — pointing out, too late, what Lando Calrissian had already realized. “It’s a trap!”

DEATH NOTE
Posted in Cartoons, death, entertainment, news, thriller with tags Anime on February 26, 2016 by chrisdsavSuper DUPER deluxe bluray set looks amazing and worth the price if you never owed the series before.
I was going to buy the dvd set at Bestbuy until I saw that this was coming out.
Deathnote is based on the hugely popular Manga of the same name from Japan.
Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s suspenseful story follows Light a high school student who discovers a notebook with the ability to kill whomever he wishes. WRiting their name in it.
I jumped on this anime show a little later than most people had. I’m really picky about my Anime. A lot of the time the writing can be real dense and over wrought with drama and dialogue that is taking it self way too seriously.
Of course I watch a ton of Hentai and actually enjoy the narrative between sex secenes, so what does that say about me?
The list of bonus material included is worth the price point if 69.99
This limited edition 6-disc collector’s set includes the complete 37-episode series with five language options along with two feature films (available in three languages) and hours of additional extras! This definitive set also comes with a 64-page booklet, which features the original manga pilot story that inspired the series packaged inside an exclusive chipboard box. Three hours of additional extra content includes interviews with the Japanese creators, behind-the-scenes footage of the English and Japanese voice cast, production art, audio commentary and much more
I think the best part is you get two of the three live action movies. L Change The World is not included.
If you have never seen this show before and always wanted to check it out this be a great set to pick up this Spring.
