DEATH NOTE

Posted in Cartoons, death, entertainment, news, thriller with tags on February 26, 2016 by chrisdsav

Super DUPER deluxe bluray set looks amazing and worth the price if you never owed the series before.
I was going to buy the dvd set at Bestbuy until I saw that this was coming out.

image

Deathnote is based on the hugely popular Manga of the same name  from Japan.
Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s suspenseful story follows Light a high school student who discovers a notebook with the ability to kill whomever he wishes. WRiting their name in it.
I jumped on this anime show a little later than most people had. I’m really picky about my Anime. A lot of the time the writing can be real dense and over wrought with drama and dialogue that is taking it self way too seriously.
Of course I watch a ton of Hentai and actually enjoy the narrative between sex secenes, so what does that say about me?

The list of bonus material included is worth the price point if 69.99

This limited edition 6-disc collector’s set includes the complete 37-episode series with five language options along with two feature films (available in three languages) and hours of additional extras! This definitive set also comes with a 64-page booklet, which features the original manga pilot story that inspired the series packaged inside an exclusive chipboard box. Three hours of additional extra content includes interviews with the Japanese creators, behind-the-scenes footage of the English and Japanese voice cast, production art, audio commentary and much more

I think the best part is you get two of the three live action movies. L Change The World  is not included.

If you have never seen this show before and always wanted to check it out this be a great set to pick up this Spring.

Resident Evil HD Collection

Posted in Monsters, Video Games, Zombies on February 20, 2016 by chrisdsav

What is old is new again and in better shape than ever with CapcomResident Evil HD collection. Bringing you back to the first two games in the time line you can explore the twisted horror mansion all over again.
If you played these before but only on the original Playstation or the Game cube then you can check out the newly enhanced graphics and game play. In RE1  gone are the tank controls which were some of the worst designs in the series.
You get better graphics but the same awful dialogue. They seems to take the setting from the Game cube remastered version of the original Resident Evil to make the layout in the HD version.

image

(Bio hazard is the name of the series  in Japan which makes a lot of sense considering they leave the RESIDENCE  after the first game)

Every detail is the same almost with some slight changes like when you beat Zero you can play the Wesker mode where you have super speed snd agility to do more hand to hand combat. Of cource all of Weskers  lines are still Billy Cowen the escaped Prisoner that Rebecca teams up with. Rebecca also has a Wesker  mode with the glowing scared attached to her chest.
Both games have several costumes you can choose from for dress up including looks from other games for Jill and Chris in RE1.
In RE1 when a Zombie dies if you don’t destroy the head the body disappears and later on in stead of a hunter you get a Red Dead Zombie, much faster and harder to kill.

The stinted dialogue is still here making you cringe every other word that is spoken.

He set has a 40 price tag but you can also digitally download the game you want to play and skip buying the other for 20 on Xbox and Play Station network. Coming soon it was announced a new HD version  of RE 2. We ,a also be getting  Resident Evil 7 a CGI animated film based on the first game and of cource Paul WS  Anderson  new film will be out late this year.

It seems to be the best time to be a Resident Evil fan.

Mini Reviews 2016

Posted in ghosts, Japan, thriller, Zombies with tags , on February 12, 2016 by chrisdsav

Been awhile since I  had a massive thing of reviews on my page I thought I start with the 3 horror movies that hit theaters in 2016. Its all female horror as every film on the list stars a female as the lead character, sometimes the only character thru most of the films.

The Forrest

Forest

What a boring movie, based on a neat and original idea. Based in the Black Forest of Japan, Aokigahara Forest which is considered the number two spot to kill your self behind the Golden Gate Bridge.  Staring Queen Margaery of Game of Thrones,  Natalie Dormer as Twin Sisters Jess and Sara Price. Sara goes into the forest disappears her sister goes looking for her and encounters the Ghost of the Forest and a tour guide who may or may not be as he seems. Directed by Jason Zada writer of one of my favorite new Horror movies The House October Built it  don’t seem like its the same style. House really had a sense of a horror movie that kept you griping and I loved it and the original found footage move made. The Forest is needlessly confusing with little to no character development and barely any conversational dialogue. Over use of CGi and too little scares make it a mundane film.

The Boy

A long stretch of a movie that takes a bit too long to deliver the reveal of the movie. Staring The Walking Dead Laura Cohen as an American Nanny who is hired by a elderly British couple to look after their son only to find out its a doll made too look like their dead kid. I don’t understand who Laura hides her British accent as she her self is English and plays the American but at least its not the forced Southern Accent from TWD. I digress, the movie has this SHOCKING PLOT POINT revealed ( I’m going to spoil it for you The boy didn’t died he is a full grown man living in the walls.) It makes no sense how they get there. The entire time your thinking back after the reveal to the different clues they tried to leave behind and they don’t make any sense. This is an ok movie and better than the Forest but not by much. Directed by William Brent Bell who also did Stay Alive and The Devil Inside. Neither of which are very good either.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

zz2

Based on the book by Jane Austin and Seth Grahame Smith we have the classic story but now with Zombies. It is not the plot from Austin’s Novel blow by ZOmbie Blow but its a fun movie to watch. Lily James plays the heroine of the movie who can handle her self and does not feel as though she should marry if not in love. Something that is carried over in many of Austin’s novels. She and her sisters take on men with bad intentions and Zombies who want to eat them alive. She discovers a sinister plot and is swooned by a man she considers an ass hole thru most of the movie played by Sam Riley the infamous Mr. Darcy. Another movie staring Game of Thrones actors this time Cersi Lannister Lena Headey and her father Tywin Lannister Charles Dance.  We also get a bafooning Matt Smith which acts very much like the Doctor would in a Zombie Armageddon. There is something I really love about a woman in Victorian era dress killing Zombies swinging a sword. The movie is entertaining and worth a watch just don’t expect the Walking Dead Level of gore and violence as its PG13, most likely to draw in that younger audience who read the book.

Both the Boy and PPZ are playing at The Black Stone Valley Cinema in Millbury MA.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

At my local Bestbuy I learned Neon Genesis Evangelion 3.33 had been released on blu ray and I had to obtain the next chapter in the enhanced anime series. First though  I thought I share with you a memory flash back.

I was going thru my local flea market in Charlton MA back in 2004 and on a table were the first 6 vol of an anime show I had only seen commercials for and heard very little about. I decided to take a chance after several conversations with other anime fans who told me I was missing out.
I snatched up all 6 after making a deal with the vendor, and it exposed me to the most adult giant robot show of all time. I hunted down the other remaining vol to finish the show. I never got into the manga in which its based on.

3 young pilots living in post apocalyptic  Japan pilot  giant robots called Eva to defend their country against  demonic looking creatures with so much mystery  and intriguing  plot points you can see why it’s such a beloved show. The main character Shinji  lives in this harem style plot line in his apartment where he is the only male living with three gorgeous woman two teenage girls snd his handler. All the while his father is the head of the Eva program and is as much a  father figure as Darth Vader was.

The reason I bring it up on Radio of Horror is its the darkest anime sci fi show I have ever watched. Yes there is horror shows and Demon rape shows like hentai. But look at the over all flowing stpry narative of this one snd really get a sence of a foreboding snd Sinister plot.

Now recently the show has been released in these movie formats sets called 1.11 2.22 and 3.33. They condense the shows bigger plot points into movies that might be easier for the average viewer to handel.
This is enhanced by superior  animation and graphic touch up with CGI  being used to enhance the special effects.

3.33 You can not redo Is the newest Editon out now and if you never watched the show or were very confused by it’s story telling I recommend this set.

Dr.Chris Record Spotlight: Carmilla A Vampire Tale

Posted in entertainment, Horror Babes, music, Theater, vampires, vinyl on February 4, 2016 by chrisdsav

Kind of an odd one in my collection  as I’m not a big fan of plays or musicals. I say this regardless of the fact I was just in Mrs. Hawking two weeks ago directed by Phoebe Roberts. Maybe my attitude  has changed toward them over the years as I have gotten older. I have seen Young Frankenstein, The Addams Family and Rock of Ages the musicals and loved them all. I even tried to make a fan play based on one of my favorite  TV shows of all time, Supernatural.

image

The story of Carmilla is fitting as its February  and Valentines is coming up and I don’t own the soundtracks to My Bloody Valentine or Valentine.

Carmilla is a Gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker’s Dracula by 26 years. It is the first lesbian Vampire stpry written. First published as a serial in The Dark Blue (1871–72), the story is narrated by a young woman preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla, later revealed to be Mircalla, Countess Karnstein (Carmilla is an anagram of Mircalla). The story is often anthologized and has been adapted many times in different ways. I am a big fan of her apearence in the Castlevania video games.

A chamber opera version of Carmilla appeared in Carmilla: A Vampire Tale(1970), music by Ben Johnston, script by Wilford Leach. Seated on a sofa, Laura and Carmilla recount the story retrospectively.

Here is a great article by the NY times circa 1986 discussing the play which I have never seen. All my vinyl reviews up till now have been about movies I have seen. This is the first soundtrack in my collection  based on a play.

It’s a different kind of music than what I’m use too Ben Johnston mixes opera with Gothic melody to create a story that is deep into the original narative. The record it self has a pretty piece of art work on the front and a black and white pictures from the stage performance on the back with a bio about the play. Other than that there is not much else.

If you love vampires and want to check out the original female blood sucker then hunt down a copy of this album.
